Where gravity drainage is not possible, a condensate pump handles it, adding a component that can fail. Pump failures typically present as water at the head or a system that shuts down on a pump safety.

Communication and Control Faults

Ductless systems rely on communication between indoor and outdoor units over a control cable. Wiring faults, corrosion at terminals, and control board problems produce error codes rather than the simpler on/off symptoms of conventional equipment.

Those codes are useful. Recording the exact code and its blink pattern before service speeds diagnosis considerably, since codes are manufacturer-specific and point directly at a subsystem.

Multi-Zone Considerations

On multi-zone systems, one head failing while others work usually points at that zone's expansion device, sensor, or branch wiring rather than at the outdoor unit. When all zones underperform together, attention returns to the outdoor unit, refrigerant charge, and the shared circuit.

Charge on ductless equipment is line-length dependent, and an installation that was never charge-adjusted for its actual line set can underperform from day one without ever having a leak.
