Frozen AC Coil Repair

Ice on an air conditioner in Florida looks wrong, and it is. A frozen evaporator coil means the coil is running colder than design, which almost always traces back to restricted airflow or low refrigerant charge. Running the system through it makes things worse.

Why Coils Freeze

The evaporator coil absorbs heat from indoor air. When too little warm air passes across it, or when refrigerant pressure in the coil is too low, coil surface temperature drops below freezing. Condensate that would normally drain away turns to frost, then to ice, and the ice further blocks airflow in a self-reinforcing loop.

Preventing Repeat Freezing

Most repeat freezing is airflow related and preventable. Filters need checking monthly during heavy cooling season, registers need to stay open, and the blower assembly benefits from periodic cleaning as part of routine maintenance.

If ductwork is undersized or damaged, no filter schedule will compensate. In that case the durable fix is on the distribution side rather than the equipment.
